Captains' Quarters: Stories of the Schooner Victory Chimes

Well known along the coast of Maine for her three masted configuration, “The Chimes” as she is often called, was originally named the “Edwin and Maude” and home ported in Seaford, DE. She spent much of her career as a freighter out of Baltimore, hauling mostly corn and wheat. In 1946, she started carrying passengers in the Chesapeake until she was purchased and brought to Maine in 1954 and renamed the Victory Chimes. Many locals remember that she was purchased by the founder of Domino’s Pizza during the 1980’s, renamed “Domino Effect” and painted with a red, white and blue color scheme which was not appreciated by many local traditionalists, but Domino’s also spent a considerable amount of money on an extensive and much-needed refit, essentially saving the vessel for the future.

In 1991, under the ownership of Captains Kip Files and Paul DeGaeta, she was renamed Victory Chimes and the State of Maine honored her by recognizing her as one of the premier vessels in the American Windjammer Fleet. She is the only Maine windjammer to receive this distinction, and she currently sails across a US quarter, representing the State of Maine.
