Ice Receding/Books Reseeding - Honourable Mention - 2021 LTAW International Film Prize Awards
Directors: Basia Irland
Country: United States and Canada
ICE RECEDING/BOOKS RESEEDING focuses on the ice book sculptures of artist Basia Irland. These works emphasize the necessity of communal effort, scientific knowledge, and artistic expression to deal with the complex issues of climate disruption and watershed restoration by releasing seed-laden ephemeral ice sculptures into rivers. With the help of local communities, the Ice Books are launched into the water. As they float downstream and melt, the native seeds, selected in consultation with stream ecologists and botanists, are released and begin to plant themselves along the riverbanks. During the past 15 years, Irland has created over a hundred of these time-based sculptures for global rivers. More recently, she has been working with people from around the world who want to create their own Ice Books as a way to make connections to their watersheds and initiate restorative actions that address local ecological issues.
"What About Water?" is the water science communication outreach arm of the Global Institute for Water Security at the University of Saskatchewan. Formerly known as "Let's Talk About Water", we engage the public through our podcasts, videos, film competitions, webinars, forums, and more.
