Lhoist North America: Mine Tour and Freight Train
Lhoist North America is a Belgium-based mining company that owns and operates the former Franklin Industrial Minerals limestone mine at Crab Orchard, TN. In the early 2000s, Norfolk Southern considered abandoning Franklin’s only connection to the North American rail network - a 16-mile branch line with multiple high wooden trestles that were costly to maintain. As the only customer along the line, Franklin feared losing its vital connection and as a result, purchased the former Tennessee Central mainline from Crab Orchard to Rockwood, Tennessee. As part of the purchase, Franklin would acquire three General Electric High Hood B23-7 locomotives from Norfolk Southern. In 2006, Franklin Industries was sold to the Chemical Lime Company, a subsidiary of Lhoist North America. Since taking over, Lhoist continues to operate the railroad with Franklin’s classic roster of GE products.
On October 28th, 2019, our friends from Lhoist North America graciously invited us to tour the load-out facility at their mine in Crab Orchard, Tennessee. In continuous operation for over 100 years, Lhoist’s Crab Orchard site is one of the largest high-purity limestone mines in the region. To transport the ground limestone product, Lhoist maintains and operates a sixteen-mile rail line from Crab Orchard to Rockwood, Tennessee.
With vintage locomotives exceeding forty years old, Lhoist takes great pride in maintaining its equipment. In fact, the mining company has a full-service locomotive shop facility complete with a sanding tower, two tracks, a service-bay, and a parts department for locomotive maintenance and repair. Continual investment in rail has proven to be a healthy return on investment for Lhoist. After touring the shop facilities, we would venture over to the mine’s loadout, safely guided on the property grounds by Lhoist management.
