Why concussion can cause ringing in your ears

One thing many people notice after concussion is tinnitus (ringing, buzzing, or other sounds) in the ears that were not there before.
What often surprises people is that tinnitus after concussion does not always come from obvious damage to the ear itself. Concussion can also disrupt the way the brain processes and interprets sound. In some cases, the brain can begin perceiving sound even when no external sound is present.
For many people, this can feel confusing, intrusive, distressing, and difficult to ignore, particularly when nobody mentioned it as a possible symptom after concussion.
This episode explores one possible reason tinnitus can occur after concussion and why these symptoms are very real experiences for many patients.
Part of the Concussion & Communication series exploring hearing, listening, dizziness, tinnitus, auditory processing and brain health after concussion.
