DNA results of Catacomb Culture (KBD002)
The Catacomb culture, also known as the Yamnaya culture, was an ancient archaeological culture that flourished in the Pontic-Caspian steppe region during the late Copper Age and early Bronze Age, roughly between 2800 BCE and 2200 BCE. This culture is named after the characteristic burial practice of burying the dead in catacomb-like structures, often accompanied by rich grave goods. The Catacomb culture is notable for its innovations in metallurgy, particularly in bronze production, which played a significant role in the development of early Bronze Age societies.
The people of the Catacomb culture were predominantly pastoralists and skilled horse riders, known for their mobile lifestyle and the use of wagons for transportation. They herded cattle, sheep, and horses, and their economy was based on animal husbandry and limited agriculture. The Catacomb culture is also associated with the spread of Indo-European languages, as evidenced by linguistic and archaeological evidence linking them to the expansion of early Indo-European speaking populations across Europe and Asia.
Artifacts from Catacomb culture sites include pottery decorated with intricate designs, bronze tools and weapons such as daggers, axes, and spearheads, as well as ornaments made from gold, copper, and bone. Their burial practices, including the use of catacombs and the inclusion of grave goods, reflect beliefs and customs related to death and the afterlife. The Catacomb culture played a significant role in shaping the cultural and technological landscape of the Eurasian steppes during the transition from the Copper Age to the Bronze Age, leaving a lasting legacy in the archaeological record.
