What is The Future Of Imagination | Wayne Moodaley | TEDxUniversityofJohannesburg

Every generation has had new inventions that have shaped our individual and collective imagination: from books – which allowed people to imagine people, places, and things that they had never seen – to radio, television and film which brought new texture to our imagination. While we tend to believe that we have the same capacity to imagine as our forebears did, the influences that shape imagination – ideas, people, places, things, creations, inventions – have shifted, shaped, and changed humanity’s imagination across different eras.
As new generative artificial intelligence (AI) technologies allow us to imagine and create ultrarealistic stories, images and even video, a key question is: “What is the future of imagination for humanity?
The digital age has provided more access to knowledge and information than any other time in human history. Yet much of what humanity has achieved has come about due to its capacity to imagine. As Einstein stated “Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited, whereas imagination embraces the entire world, stimulating progress, giving birth to evolution.”
As we stand at the cusp of Society 5.0, we should ask: “Will AI spark new ideas for us and allow us to imagine new futures? Will it become a crutch, becoming more and more imaginative on our behalf while we become passive consumers of what it can imagine for us? Or will these new technologies usher in a new era of symbiosis between humanity and its creations?
An accomplished public speaker and senior lecturer with research interests in the intersection of artificial intelligence, sustainability reporting and greenwashing.
