Different Types of Autism 🧩

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) affects individuals differently, with unique strengths and challenges. Previously, autism was classified into different subtypes, but in 2013, the DSM-5 merged them into a single diagnosis under Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) with different levels of support needs.

Level 1 Autism (High-Functioning Autism / Asperger’s Syndrome) 🏆
🔹 Mild autism symptoms with minimal support needed
🔹 Difficulty with social interactions and understanding nonverbal cues 🤷‍♂️
🔹 May have intense interests or repetitive behaviors 🔄
🔹 Often experiences sensory sensitivities 🎧

Level 2 Autism (Moderate Autism) ⚖️
🔹 Requires substantial support for communication and daily activities 🏡
🔹 Noticeable social and behavioral challenges 🗣️
🔹 More difficulty with change and flexibility in routines 🔄❌
🔹 Sensory sensitivities can be more pronounced 🔊

Level 3 Autism (Severe Autism) 🚨
🔹 Requires very substantial support in daily life 🤲
🔹 Significant communication difficulties, may be nonverbal or use AAC devices 📱
🔹 Strong resistance to change, repetitive behaviors 🔄⚠️
🔹 High sensory sensitivities, often leading to meltdowns 😣

Other Common Autism Classifications 🧠
🔸 Regressive Autism – A child develops typically but then loses speech or social skills 🚸
🔸 Nonverbal Autism – Individuals with little to no spoken language, often using alternative communication methods 📖
🔸 PDA (Pathological Demand Avoidance) – Extreme resistance to everyday demands due to anxiety 😰

Autism is a spectrum, meaning each individual experiences it differently. Recognizing these differences helps provide proper support and accommodations.
