India, Canada expel diplomats as tensions rise over Sikh separatist's killing

India and Canada have expelled their top diplomats amid escalating tensions over the assassination of a Sikh separatist on Canadian soil.

India denied the accusations, describing them as part of Trudeau's "political agenda".

Meanwhile, "security threat" grounded Air India flight in Canada's Iqaluit airport.

Air India said on X that 211 passengers, from Delhi to Chicago, and the aircraft were re-screened.

Citizens of northern Punjab state, the historic homeland of the Sikhs, expressed their concerns over the bitter diplomatic tussle.

India's main opposition Congress party has urged PM Modi's government to take all political parties into consideration regarding worsening ties with Canada.

While the leader of Canada's New Democratic Party, Trudeau's main opposition, called for sanctions on Indian diplomats.

India-Canada row intensified over last year's assassination of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Canada-based Sikh separatist leader labelled a terrorist by India.

There are some 770,000 Sikhs living in Canada, home to the largest Sikh diaspora outside the Indian state of Punjab.
