Webcast of the Month: Fundamentals of Disinfection

Wastewater disinfection is a critical treatment process, and UV disinfection is becoming a more attractive disinfection alternative for many wastewater utilities. Regulatory agencies are looking favorably on implementation of this technology, not only to address risk management issues associated with gas chlorine, but also to eliminate the potential to produce disinfection by-products also associated with hypochlorite.

This presentation provides an overview of regulatory considerations, the fundamental principles of UV disinfection and how these factors impact the design, operations and maintenance of UV systems for wastewater disinfection. In addition, a case study is presented on the selection of UV disinfection for the City of Jefferson, Missouri, which was faced with a permit modification that required seasonal disinfection of their wastewater effluent. The City with their consultant, evaluated various disinfection technologies, with low pressure, high output UV disinfection being the most cost effective. The system has been completed and is operational; lessons learned regarding maintenance, operations, and general functionality of the UV will be presented.
