Gamla Stan Stockholm - Walking Tour

The street we are about to walk down now - Västerlånggatan was for many centuries one of the major streets of Stockholm

During the 15th century, the street became the paved artery road it still is today

House of Palmstedt, the private home of the great architect Erik Palmstedt of the closing 18th century.

Sven Vintappares Gränd Alley - The writer and poet Anna Maria Lenngren (1754–1817) mentions the alley in a poem describing Mårten Holk an anonymous man living in the alley.

Stora Nygatan Street - The street was created as part of a new town plan following the great fire of 1625, and thus probably dates to about 1630

The restaurant Den Gyldene Freden has been in business, continuously, since 1722 and according to the Guinness Book of Records is the longest operated restaurant with an unchanged environment in the world.

From the mid-19th century to the early-mid 20th century Gamla stan was considered a slum, many of its historical buildings left in disrepair

Kornhamnstorg ("Grain Harbour Square”) where corn was delivered to the city by ships.

In the basement of the Restaurant Engelen is the Kolingen nightclub. Famous Swedish artists such as them Peter Jöback and Ainbusk Singers, also Robert Wells.

Järntorget (The Iron Square) is the second oldest square in Stockholm. In the 14th century and beyond the square was used for trading.

Tullgränd Alley (customs Alley) First historical record of the alley is around 1626

Skeppsbrokajen (Ship's Bridge's Quay) During the 1630s, the work on the foundations of the present quay were begun.

Af Chapman is a fully rigged steel ship. Sold to the Swedish navy in 1923 and used as a training ship. She has sailed around the world several times.
