DEMOCRACY DAY: NOA URGES NIGERIANS TO DEEPEN DEMOCRATIC VALUES, STRENGTHEN NATIONAL UNITY

The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has called on Nigerians to reaffirm their commitment to democratic principles, active citizenship, and national unity as the country marks Democracy Day.

NOA Director-General, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, in a statement on Thursday, described June 12 as a historic symbol of Nigerians’ resilience, courage, and determination in the quest for democratic governance and protection of fundamental rights.

He noted that Democracy Day is not only a celebration of those who sacrificed for its enthronement, but also of the enduring spirit of Nigerians who continue to uphold democratic ideals despite challenges.

The NOA boss emphasized that democracy goes beyond periodic elections and requires continuous citizen engagement, respect for the rule of law, tolerance of diverse opinions, civic responsibility, and commitment to the collective good.

He urged Nigerians, particularly the youth, to reject misinformation, political violence, hate speech, and other actions capable of undermining national cohesion and democratic institutions.

The Director-General called on all Nigerians to use the occasion to renew faith in the nation’s democratic journey and work together to build a more united, peaceful, and prosperous Nigeria.
