Elon Musk wants to create a self-sustaining city on Mars, which has the minimum distance to Earth is about 33.9 million miles (54.6 million kilometers). However, that doesn't happen very often. So it’s safe to say that distance is the most difficult part of achieving this goal. To do so, SpaceX needs some seriously advanced rockets, and the rockets’ engines need to be even more powerful. This is where Raptor comes in.
It is the most advanced rocket engine that humanity has ever created.It should be similar to a car engine. Something that you can turn on and off without fear of it exploding. Instead of transporting you to the market, it delivers you to another world. It's difficult to design anything this complicated, and it's even more difficult to mass-produce hundreds of them.
In the recent video of Everyday Astronaut interviewing Elon Musk, he also once again emphasized that manufacturing is underrated and design is overrated; developing a production system is 10-100 times harder than designing the product, which according to Musk, proved especially true with Raptor. Furthermore, as volume production increases the amount of effort that goes into design rounds down to 0.
Yet Elon recently tweeted that “Raptor production is approaching one every 48 hours”. That can be interpreted as SpaceX will mass-produce Raptor, but can release a Raptor every 48 hours. Well, this is an extremely impressive number for any engine manufacturing company on this planet.
So why are elon musk and spacex able to produce raptor engines so quickly?
The first element that I want to introduce to you is 3D printing.
One of the biggest keys to SpaceX's ability to produce raptor engines so quickly lies in their obsession with processes. Every single step of the manufacturing process is as optimized as the world's greatest engineers can possibly make it. SpaceX had specialized 3D printers even 10 years ago. They specify the shape of a tube no matter how complicated it is. This machine will perfectly replicate it over and over again.
