An All-Star Celebration of Latin Rhythms

In his new project, Con Tumbao, Cuban singer-songwriter Issac Delgado brings together an extraordinary band playing a repertory that speaks a familiar language in many accents.

The ensemble features Issac Delgado Jr., piano; Alain Pérez, bass and vocals; Robby Ameen, drums; Pedrito Martínez, congas and percussion; Tony Succar, timbal; Yunior Arronte, saxophone; Mike Rodríguez and Juan Munguía, trumpet; and Conrad Herwig, trombone.

It's a diverse group, with multiple Grammy winners, first-call sidemen, bandleaders and a MacArthur grant genius. Individually and as a group, their work crisscrosses and connects a universe of traditional and contemporary Latin styles. Con Tumbao’s goal is to create a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts.

Con Tumbao celebrates the common ingredient in Latin music that urges hips to sway — that irresistible swing that is an essential part of the sound that Latin artists live and breathe. This is music of the people. No matter where you’re from, you’re invited to the party.

What is tumbao? Tumbao is not a word from the dictionary, but in our countries it means: swing and groove, and also the sensual movement of men and women.

Opening the concert will be Brazilian guitarist Diego Figueiredo, who has recorded more than two dozen albums and has toured across the globe. His expressive voice on the acoustic guitar draws inspiration from his home country’s rich musical heritage, and he has a deep sense of jazz’s quirkiness and the classic guitar tradition.

Figueiredo spends much time in North America, performing solo and in duos with the likes of Larry Coryell, Ken Peplowski, John Clayton, Jeff Hamilton, Stanley Jordan and Cyrille Aimée. George Benson said, “Diego is one of the greatest guitarists I’ve seen in my whole life.”
