Korsakov is the first and oldest of the Russian settlements of Sakhalin and the Sakhalin region as a whole.
On September 22 1853, the Russian navigator GI Nevelskoy established the military guard post Muravievsky named in honor of the Governor-General of Eastern Siberia, N. N. Muravyova. The chief was appointed Major N.V Busse . However, on May 30, 1854 the post was evacuated in connection with the outbreak of the Crimean War .
On July 31, 1869 the outpost was restored under a different name - Korsakov in honour of another East Siberian governor-general - M.S Korsakov. With the establishment of a penal settlement on the island, Korsakov becomes the centre of the Korsakov district. On September 12, 1890 Anton Chekhov arrived here, living here a month, during which time he wrote in his book "Sakhalin Island".
In 1905 the territory of southern Sakhalin went to Japan, Korsakov was renamed Otomari...
In 1945, the island was returned to Russia and Otomari rerurned its previous name of Korsakov.
