Evening Bells Evgeny Belyaev; Вечерний звон Евгений Беляев

An untypical solo recording by Evgeny Belyaev, probably from the early 1970s, when he was starting to specialise in Russian Romance and his voice tended to be more restrained than hitherto.
Music Ivan Kozlov (1928); lyrics S Sveshnikov (adapted from Thomas Moore).

The Red Army Choir has recorded it more recently with soloist Vasilij Larin. This is included in my Alexandrov playlist. A better comparison, however, is the version by the operatic tenor Nikolai Gedda, who sings it in a similar way to Belyaev, albeit with a choir,, Saved in my Great Singers playlist,

The photograph is mine, taken at the Moscow Kremlin on a sunny autumn day.
Evening bell, evening bell!
How many a thought it inspires.
Of youth days in my native land,
Where I loved, where my father's house is.
And also of the moment when leaving it forever,
I was hearing the bell there for the last time!
