Marcelo Garcia: Single Leg & High Leg Trip to Back Control

3 Part Lesson - Marcelo mixes wrestling and judo to attack a strong opponent on the feet: If your opponent doesn't fall down onto their butt from "Running-The-Pipe" (a fundamental single-leg take-down finish from folk-style and free-style amateur wrestling), "jack-up" the opponent's captured leg out from in between your legs and into secure it into your far armpit. Chop out their lone, supporting-leg by swiping at it from the front with your own lead-leg . Remember to let your sweeping leg clear out from underneath your opponent so that your knee and ankle are free from counter-attack (n.b., although illegal in most competition rule-sets, your opponent could potentially attempt a "Flying-Scissors" Take-Down. Take your opponent's back when/if they fall forward face down (e.g., see Marcelo's ADCC 2007 Quater-Finals). If they base out on all-fours, jump onto them for "Seat-Belt" Control; if they rebound back up onto their feet, control with a Back-Body-Lock first before jumping up to fasten the Seat-Belt and set your hooks for Back-Control. [05:43] Practice safe break-fall techniques when drilling. Have your partner react by falling face first and catching themselves onto their hands as if entering into the "Worm" dance-move. [08:17] Whenever you are behind your partner and controlling their hips with a Back-Body-Lock or Rear-Waist-Hold, don't ever hang your weight and drop down onto the side of their legs. Also, don't spike your opponent's head into the mat with a "Burial" technique against a "Head-Outside" Single-Leg attempt.
