Quick Tip: 1911 Series 70 vs Series 80

If you thumb through the 1911 section of the Brownells catalog, you'll see a lot of references to "Series 70" and "Series 80" parts. What does that mean? Brownells Gun Tech Caleb Savant is here to explain. A Series 80 1911 has a firing pin safety in the slide that prevents the firing pin from going forward unless the trigger is pulled. On the frame, to the right of the disconnector, there's an arm that protrudes up when you pull the trigger to release that firing pin safety. Series 70 pistols lack this firing pin safety and the mechanics to operate it. The grip safeties are also slightly different, though a Series 70 grip safety can be installed on a Series 80 1911 with a little fitting. Several companies make parts to convert a Series 80 gun into a 70. But why do that? The Series 70 typically has a lighter, smoother trigger pull than a Series 80. Fewer moving parts also means fewer parts to break. As a result, most custom 1911s are built as Series 70 guns.
