The village of Lynx Grove was abuzz with excitement. The annual merchant caravan was due to arrive any moment, and the air was thick with anticipation. Kael stood on the edge of the village square, his eyes scanning the horizon for the first sign of the caravan. At twelve years old, he was small for his age but made up for it with boundless energy and an insatiable curiosity.

“Do you think they’ll have anything new this year?” Kael asked, turning to his best friend, Mira. She was crouched nearby, gently stroking the fur of a rabbit that had hopped out of the forest to greet her.
Mira shrugged, her green eyes sparkling with mischief. “Who knows? Maybe they’ll bring something magical. Or dangerous. Or both.”
