Traditional Korean Ships and Vessels Part 2: The Age of Battleships

#Naval #History #Korea

It is disputed among historians whether the turtleship was an ironclad.
Arguments for the ironclad theory include:
1. The Japanese records state that the turtle ship was "covered in iron"
2. The Japanese in 1593 began to use iron plates on their ships in response to encountering the Korean navy, 1 year after seeing the turtle ships in combat.
3. The turtle ships were fireproof
Arguments against the ironclad theory include:
1. Iron would have been too valuable to use up so many in one ship
2. The Korean records do not mention iron plating

Recently, korean historians from a national institute revealed a model that proposed that the turtle ships would have had iron plates on the sides of the ship to protect itself from small arms and cannon fire, while the roof would have had only spikes.
