The legend "Kurt is a precious stone"
The women's suffering, torment between mother and child don't leave indifferent anyone. In the camp women prisoners worked very hard: they digged ditches by hand, made mud bricks from clue and reeds, built farms, raised cows, in the wintertime collected reeds nearby Zhalanash lake.
Poor women found themselves far from their homelands, husbands and children. They didn't lose humanity and personal quality, and believed in justice, kindness and honesty. They were not divided by nationalities, professions and ages. In the difficult times they tried to help themselves.
Camp prisoners wrote and told many stories of camp life. According to these, next to the camp, straight behind the lake there was a Kazakh village called Zhanazhol. Thanks to this settlement many women survived.
Once when prisoners worked on the lake cutting reeds, some old Kazakh people came in large malakhays, women and children with them . The children were holding bags then, suddenly the children began to take stones from their bags and throw them at the prisoners.
The guards and escorts started laughing loudly: "Look, what kind of enemies are you? Not only are you not loved in Moscow, but you are also not loved in Aul.
The children throw stones at you!" It was offensive and women cried.
After a while the Kazakhs went away. One of the women, carrying an armful of reeds tripped over the stones, and it seemed to smell strange- like milk and cheese.
Then the prisoners understood that the women, children and old men, coming from nearby Aul, risked their lives to throw this food to the prisoners.
When they came back to the barracks that evening, the prisoners thanked God for support and asked them health and longevity, and that the children would not know grief, hunger or loneliness.
Not only did the villagers bring cheese but on many occasions they brought bread, butter and meat. The guards and escorts, standing above all this, never saw it happen.
