Maytag washer self-test mode

How to put a Maytag front-load washer into diagnostic self test mode. Also see below for links to fixes for common codes.

The self-test mode is said to be a very complete test of all functions. Mine's model MHW6000AW2 but this works on the whole family (MHW6000, MHW7000, MHW8000) and apparently others.

With washer powered off, press, in this order: TEMPERATURE, SOIL LEVEL, SPIN SPEED. Repeat twice. Total of nine presses. Now press SOIL LEVEL and the start button.

If you get an error code, Google it (e.g. "maytag washer f06 e02") and you will find lots of answers.

Free bonus advice: After every load, wipe the gray rubber gasket around the door opening dry, including under the flap. Leave the door open for a day. Once a month or so, run the "clean washer" mode as instructions recommend. (You can use bleach rather than buying Affresh.) Do this and you won't get mold on the gasket.
