In 1989, Lake Torrens in outback South Australia flooded for the first time in 100 years.

The inflow of water attracted bird and marine life to the area that hadn’t been seen for about a century.

A team of scientists from Flinders University rushed to the site to document the phenomenon and study the environmental changes.

They hoped to compare their findings against those taken at other water systems to potentially find a way to manage water resources in dry areas.

The group was accompanied by the Australian military, who provided communication and transport support as well as base camp facilities.

This rainfall event came five years after Lake Eyre in SA’s Far North flooded.
