How To Practice Ukulele | The Honest Truth

In this ukulele video I'm going to give you the honest truth on how to practice. New premium membership now available at https://bit.ly/2NsGIkr

This is not going to be a video telling you that if you practice 10 minutes a day and work 2 minutes on scales, 3 minutes on chords, and 5 minutes on strumming that you are going to become an amazing ukulele player.

This video will be the truth taken from my years of experience as a Los Angeles based musician.

The first thing I can share with you is a tip that I learned from the great Joe Diorio while I was getting my Master of Music from the University of Southern California. Joe and I would have a lesson every Friday morning and some of the best lessons that I had were the ones were we went and got a cup of coffee and talked.

Although I learned many things from Joe, the thing that stuck out was that he told me, whenever you pick up your instrument always make music. Even when your practicing something still make it musical. Add dynamics, feeling, and personality to every note you play. Bring the music on the page to life.

My second tip is that you need to practice to what is coming up. For example if I have a show coming up where I need to learn 20 songs I'm going to have to put some extra work in to make sure that I'm ready. I may have to bump my practice schedule up to 5-6 hours a day to make sure I'm ready. I may have to make sacrifices to find the time to prepare.

If you want me to tell you that all you have to do is practice ukulele for 20 minutes a day and you'll become a great ukulele player then you come to the wrong guy. There is no shortcut. There is no easy or fast way. The only way to become the high achieving musician that you dream of is to put the work in.

If anyone tells you different I would question their motives to making you believe something that simply is not true.

The greatest and most talented musicians and athletes in the world put in more time and dedicate themselves to the process of being great and it only comes with discipline and consistency.

My third tip for you is to record video of yourself playing. Just take your phone out and film yourself and then watch it back to see how it sounds. You will be able to tell right away the things that you are doing well and the things that you need to work and improve on.

Filming yourself and watching it back is not an easy thing to do. There is some pain involved when you see yourself on camera making mistakes. This pain and this experience of analyzing yourself is truly going to make you grow as a ukulele player.

Next is to develop a performers mentality. Whether your playing by yourself, for your family or with your ukulele group, always play like it's the biggest performance of your life.

When you go into performance mode you will focus on the piece of music and play it to the best of your ability at the time. Too many times we cut ourselves slack and make excuses like, "I'm no good at the chorus section" like we are already setting ourselves up for failure.

Be confident, own your preparation and get out there and play from your soul.

My last tip is to get out and play for others. It's doesn't matter if you play for your spouse or go and play for a group of people. Get that experience of letting others hear you play. Even if you make mistakes, it's alright, it's part of the process.

Our goal is that you learn to relax when your playing for others so you can play as well as you do when you sitting at home playing in the comfort your familiar settings.

Music is a lifelong journey, you will always be improving and you will always be learning.
