INDIAN RAILWAYS : FULL MONSOON TRAIN JOURNEY : IGATPURI TO KASARA : THUL GHAT SECTION : 12187 JABALPUR - MUMBAI CSMT GARIB RATH EXPRESS.

Thul Ghat (incline) is a series of mountain slopes in the Western Ghats traversed by the Bhusawal-Kalyan line. From Kalyan to Kasara, the line covers a length of 42 mi (68 km) and rises to an altitude of 948 ft (289 m) above sea level at Kasara. The next section from Kasara to Igatpuri is 9.5 mi (15 km) across Thul Ghat and within that distance the line rises from 948 ft (289 m) to 1,918 ft (585 m) the gradient in the section being 1:37.[3] The line negotiates this steep incline with the help of curves. The Ehegaon viaduct along this line is 719 ft (219 m) long and 180 ft (55 m) high.[3] According to IRFCA, “The viaduct is situated in a steep valley nestling in the midst of hills that skirt around it in the tunnels and then is carried across the yawning chasm on a tall imposing structure… Some of the viaducts and tunnels on this line are considered outstanding achievements in Civil Engineering and are among the finest works in the world.”
Till early-2007 Direct Current (DC) was used to pull trains in this sector. on 2007-05-25, the first Alternating Current (AC) 4,800 tonne goods train was hauled through this region. AC has a traction of 25,000 volts as compared to 1,500 volts of DC. When it was under Direct Current 58 wagon trains used to be detached into two separate units, and lugged separately. Now six AC locomotives pull the entire train.[2] Winding around the railway line is National Highway 3.

Igatpuri railway station serves Igatpuri in Nashik district in the Indian state of Maharashtra. It stands at the head of Thull Ghat.
It is a loco change-over point for trains moving out of Mumbai as well as trains entering Mumbai. The trains moving out of Mumbai usually change their locomotives to WAP 4 or WAP 7 or WAM 4 as the case may be. The trains entering Mumbai usually change their locomotives to WCAM-3. The station is famous for its Wada Pav and Idli.
The first train in India travelled from Mumbai to Thane on 16 April 1853. By May, 1854, Great Indian Peninsula Railway's Mumbai-Thane line was extended to Kalyan. Bhusawal was set up in 1860, but the service started in the mid-1860s. Service up to Igatpuri was started in 1865.
The Kalyan-Igatpuri section was electrified with 1.5 kV DC overhead system in 1929.[3]Subsequent electrification with 25 kV AC overhead system in the Igatpuri-Manmad sector, with AC/DC change over at Igatpuri, was carried out in 1967-69.[4]The change over of the Mumbai area from DC to AC is complete and AC-DC locomotives are converted to pure AC locomotives.
130 trains (excluding Summer Special Trains) pass through Igatpuri (which also includes weeklies and biweeklies, etc.)
Igatpuri has electric trip sheds, with separate sheds for AC locos and AC/DC locos.

Kasara is a railway station on the Central line of the Mumbai Suburban Railway network. It is the final stop in the north-east sector of the Central Line.
For outstation trains, it is a technical halt, where bankers (generally WAG 5 or WAG 7) are attached behind the trains to enable it to cross the tough and high gradient Kasara Ghat. Earlier CR OHE was under 1500 DC KV traction, but since 19 February 2006, it has been converted to 25000 AC KV.
It takes up to 162 minutes for slow local suburban trains to reach Kasara from Victoria Terminus whereas the fast locals take 136 mins.
