Azerbaijan's president says Armenia leaving disputed region is only way for peace amid conflict

Azerbaijan's President Ilham Aliyev said on Sept. 30 that peace can only be achieved if Armenian forces leave the disputed region.

Aliyev, together with his wife his Mehriban visited a military hospital in Baku, where soldiers wounded during the clashes with Armenia are treated.

Dozens have been reported killed and hundreds wounded in fighting since Sept. 27 that has spread far beyond the enclave's borders, threatening to spill over into all-out war between the former Soviet republics of Azerbaijan and Armenia.

The Defence Ministry of Azerbaijan released footage showing artillery performing strikes on Sept. 30.

Another video released by the ministry showed military hardware located in the direction of the Jabrayil district was destroyed on Sept. 29.

Azerbaijan and the ethnic Armenian enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh said there were attacks from both sides at several directions along the line of contact that divides them.

Fighting between Azerbaijan and ethnic Armenian forces entered a fourth day on Wednesday in the biggest eruption of their decades-old conflict since a 1994 ceasefire.

The re-eruption of one of the "frozen conflicts" from the collapse of the Soviet Union has raised concerns about stability in the South Caucasus, a corridor for pipelines carrying oil and gas to world markets and raised fears that regional powers Russia and Turkey could be drawn in.
