The coronavirus stripped some European economies to the bones, and rich North and West EU member-states clearly showed that they are not willing to support their struggling neighbors in the East and South. The short-term divisions between countries like Germany and the Netherlands on the one hand, and Italy, Spain and Portugal on the other hand, could have long-term consequences. That, however, does not necessarily mean the COVID-19 will trigger the breakup of the European Union, but will certainly have a strong impact on its future.
