..................................................... The Fukushima waste water into sea is a controversial plan to release treated radioactive water from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station into the Pacific Ocean. The water was contaminated during the 2011 earthquake and tsunami that damaged the plant. Since then, Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), the operator of the plant, has been storing the water in tanks. However, the tanks are running out of space, and TEPCO says it needs to release the water in order to continue decommissioning the plant.
TEPCO says that the water has been treated through an Advanced Liquid Processing System (ALPS) to remove almost all radioactivity, except for tritium. Tritium is a radioactive isotope of hydrogen that is difficult to remove from water. However, it is also relatively harmless, as it emits low-energy radiation and does not accumulate in the body.
TEPCO plans to dilute the water to bring the tritium concentration to below regulatory standards before releasing it into the ocean. The water will be released gradually over a period of 30 years.
The plan has been endorsed by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which says that it is safe and meets international safety standards. However, the plan has been met with opposition from some neighboring countries, including China and South Korea, as well as from some local communities in Japan.
Here is a detailed description of the water treatment process:
1. The water is first passed through a series of filters to remove large particles.
2. The water is then treated with ALPS to remove radioactive isotopes.
3. The water is then diluted with seawater to bring the tritium concentration to below regulatory standards.
4. The water is then released into the ocean through a 1km underground tunnel.
TEPCO will monitor the radioactivity of the water at various stages of the treatment process, as well as the radioactivity of the ocean water at the discharge site. A system of emergency valves will ensure that no undiluted waste water is accidentally released.
The release of the Fukushima waste water into the sea is a complex and controversial issue. There are valid concerns about the potential environmental impact of the release, as well as the impact on public health. However, TEPCO and the IAEA have both said that the release is safe and necessary. The Japanese government has also said that the release is the best option available under the circumstances.
