Mount Hood Summit Climb in Winter | Up through the Pearly Gates and down Old Chute

Follow three mountaineers summit Oregon's highest peak! We climbed Mount Hood via the South Side Route in one day in mid-February 2022. Although it was a beautiful day with blue skies, watch us get through challenging conditions of windblown snow and ice.

We used splitboards and started our ascent at 2:40am from the Timberline Lodge Parking lot to the Mount Hood summit. With barely anyone on the mountain, we had time to take in the beauty of Devils Kitchen, Hogsback, Pearly Gates, and Old Cute. The Pearly Gates were very icy when we did our ascent Old Chute was a wall of ice as well. We were able to snowboard down from Devils Kitchen near Crater Rock, but the descent was very hard on our legs going over all the windblown snow and ice. The challenges and successful summit made for a memorable day.
