'Extraordinarily conservative': Mick Mulvaney on new US Speaker

Former White House Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney says the new US Speaker of the House Mike Johnson is a "nice guy" who is "extraordinarily conservative" on social issues.

“He’s a decent fellow that … hasn’t made a lot of enemies and that is ultimately what I think got him over the hump towards getting the necessary votes,” Mr Mulvaney told Sky News Australia host James Morrow.

After three weeks since Kevin McCarthy lost the speakership, Mr Johnson was elected Speaker on Wednesday on a party-line vote of 220-212.

In the first course of action under Speaker Johnson, a resolution was passed which declared solidarity with Israel, pledging to give its government whatever it needs to fight and win against Hamas.

“He is extraordinarily conservative, one of the more conservative members of the House, especially on the social issues,” Mr Mulvaney said.
