Every Monday The Director of the Mütter Museum takes a minute to showcase an item from our collection. This week Robert showcases a 500 year old german manual of military surgery. The manual depicts one of the first published book illustration of an amputation procedure. At the time they would normally cut off a limb, cauterize the wound, and stretch an animal bladder over it. The author of this manual recommends making flaps of human skin that fold over and around the wound to make a soft cushion for the stump. This technique was used centuries later during the American Civil War.
