Samburu "Singing Well", Northern Kenya

In the semi-desert of northern Kenya, Samburu tribesmen provide water for their livestock from a series of wells near dry river beds. The wells are deep, requiring men or boys to stand at different levels and pass the water up in buckets from the lowest to highest levels. At the wells I saw, there were 2 or three levels depending how deep the well was. The men "sing" as they work, actually more like a chant. For what I was told, the singing makes the work go easier, but it is also a signal to all the livestock - cattle, goats, donkeys, and camels - that water is flowing, and they come running!
