Combining digital printing with inline digital die-cutting.
The video explains an automatic short run label solution, built around the Xeikon 3030.
Combining digital printing with inline digital diecutting is the solution to print and finish short run labels in a productive way. Changing from one job to another goes automatically. Set-up times are not needed. There is simply no other solution that is so well suited for the production of short run labels as the Xeikon 3300!

The Xeikon 3300 is a advanced digital label press.
Here are some key specifications. The Xeikon 3300
• has a 330 mm wide substrate,
• prints in 5 colors: CMYK + opaque white, one pass opaque white
• prints out about 10 meters per minute
• is upgradeable in terms of speed and width. So if a printer’s business grows, the productivity can be upgraded.

The buffer behind the press creates a certain independence between the converting device, the LDU, and the digital label press.
For instance if a finished roll needs to be removed, the digital press doesn’t need to stop printing: the buffer gives the operator a couple of minutes on the LDU when it stands still.

LDU stands for Laser Die-cut Unit
This label laser die cutting machine coats and varnishes the label with UV varnish. It also die-cuts the label with a laser. It slits the labels and then rewinds.

The Central Control X-800 digital front-end technology

The X-800 digital front-end is the control center that controls the Xeikon 3300. The front-end control basically takes care of all the workflow related things like pre-press. This means ripping, color management, impositioning (step & repeat), etc. The X-800 combines prepress, data processing and press operation functionality, enabling our users to manage and print even complex variable data jobs with unprecedented ease.

One very unique characteristic of our front-end control is that it does impositioning after the rip. It rips each label once and then does step & repeat for the other labels according to a template defined in the job ticket. The impositioning defines how the different labels are positioned on the web.

The X-800 front-end knows the shape and position of each label and is able to extract the die-cut information for each label.
The X-800 is equipped with a Vectorizer plug-in software. This software sends the information to the laser die-cutter. This software can also be used to define and order a traditional die plate.

So, how does the laser die cutter knows exactly when to cut what shape? The synchronization is being done with a unique 2D barcode, printed next to the labels. This barcode refers to the shape that needs to be cut. The 2D barcode generated by the Vectorizer software links the digital press and the Laser Die-cut Unit.

The process we just explained is easily automated. Once it is set-up, no operator is needed to make it work. As such it can for instance be coupled to a web-to-print portal.
