Consequences of tobacco display ban - Leon Louw
The SA Government is intent on limiting or banning the display of tobacco products in stores. This is likely to have severe economic consequences for retailers and informal traders. The principle of the matter is not so much about smoking and tobacco as it is about the infringement of the rights of business to sell legal products. If this is allowed to occur we predict that similar restrictions will bve placed on the sale of sugary drinks, sweets and other sugar products, refined carbohydrates, salt and alcoholic beverages. Steps like these will harm South Africa's fragile economy and lead to further losses of jobs in a country with more than 36% unemployment.
