Natyasastram Visva Margam - The Global Path

Natyasastra studies gained momentum after Dr. Padma Subrahmanyam's passionate research for over half a century along with its practical resurrection. Bharatamuni's Natyasastra is the oldest grammar on performing arts in the world. The precepts found in it are of universal and timeless value. The correlated study of relevant texts and sculptures resulted in the phrase - "Padma opens a new chapter in the history of Bharatanatyam" as commented in the media five decades ago. The present new production is a paraphrase of her practical reconstruction, which she later realised to be the common grammar for dance in the Indian sub continent as well as for the Asian performing arts. Bharata's precepts came to be called Marga - the common path, with its connections with the regional variations termed Desi. This programme is intended to give a kaleidoscopic vision of the tremendous scope that Natyasastra technique offers for usage of physical and emotional expression along with utilisation of myriad forms of music.

In 'Natyasastram Visva Margam1, Dr. Padma Subrahmanyam performs her choreography with a versatile group of 18 Nrithyodaya artistes including Dr. Gayatri Kannan and Vineeth.

The programme includes the following numbers:

1) Purvaranga - the artistic and ritualistic prologue along with Thrigadha - the discussion between three.

2) Performance of 108 Karanas

3) Rasa Karana Nritta - The Karanas relevant to Navarasas relating to Ramayana

4) Natya - A scene from Kalidasa's Shakuntalam

5) Gajendra Moksham - For the music of Miagi Micheo of Japan

6) Jatayu Moksham - For the Symphony of Tchaikovsky of Russia

This programme is an offering at the feet of Bharatamuni, the Adiguru, in whose memory a Pan-Asian cultural educational research centre is coming up at Pattipulam near Mahabalipuram. Your support to Bharata-llango Foundation for Asian Culture (BIFAC) will help strengthen the harmony and common thread of spiritual aesthetics of Asia.
