Carving a Snake from Wood! Shamokin, Pa. Part 2 of 3

In part 2 of this 3 part demonstration, I'll be finishing the snake with the layout of all the scales, using a wood burning pen to put in each individual scale, and then onto the finishing. Laying out the scales for my snake carving takes a lot of discipline, along with two good sharp pencils and a good eraser. This takes more time to do this step than it does to carve the entire snake. If you keep at it, you may get done in about a week. It took me a really long time to figure out this technique for laying out scales, and I believe it is the only way to success. You need to draw on parallel lines running the length of the body remembering that the lines get closer and closer as you work your way to the tail and towards the head. Then you need to lay out perpendicular lines along the length of the body keeping the same theory in mind. Finally, you criss cross all the points to create a scale that will naturally flow with the snakes body. You have to keep your lines clean and accurate. Next, you have to burn in each individual scale along with a keel in each scale. This to takes a lot of time but the end results (if you live that long) are worth it. Suggested Paint Colors: BASE: I use Titanium White along with Raw Umber for the base, then highlight by dry brushing a brighter version of this color along the detail. BELLY: White, Cadmium Yellow, Napthol Crimson(small amount) and a very small amount of Ultramarine blue. BACK COLOR: Burnt Sienna, Napthol Crimson, Burnt Umber. BACKBONE/CROSSBANDS: Burnt Umber and Ultramarine Blue. Color inside Crossbands: Use initial back color with a little more Napthol Crimson. LINES ON CROSSBANDS: Use the belly color. SPRITZ COLOR: Use Ultramarine Blue and Burnt Umber watered down and applied with tootbrush. In part three i'll be bring the Northern Copperhead to a conclusion.
