Coehorn Mortar: Round Two, windage

This is my 2nd trip to fire my replica Coehorn Civil War Mortar. This is a black powder, muzzle loading, Mortar. Its scaled down to fire a soda can filled with concrete. Using a full charge of 200grains FFG black power it will fire a concrete filled can about 300 yards. The Coehorn Mortar was designed to be small enough for soldiers to be able to pick it up and move it around a battlefield for greater accuracy, and to be able to respond quicker to a changing battlefield. This is in contrast to traditional artillery, which is fired from well behind the front lines, with aiming adjustments made by relaying messages through a series of spotters and runners. This portable mortar was originally developed in the Netherlands by Menno van Coehoorn in 1674.

On this trip I added some sight to the mortar, and I was able to dial in the windage a little tighter. I’m struggling with inconsistency in the range, but I have some plans on how to address that on a future trip.
