Ernesto Júlio de Nazareth (March 20, 1863 – February 1, 1934) was a Brazilian composer and pianist, especially noted for his creative Maxixe and Choro compositions. Influenced by diverse rhythms like the polka, the habanera, and the lundu, Nazareth combined these elements with his classical formation to create compositions that he called “Brazilian tangos". These would be the precursors for what is known today as Choro.[1] His piano repertoire is now part of the teaching programs of classical and popular styles, as Nazareth once served as the boundary between these two worlds.

Tenebroso, Brazilian tango published in 1913 by Casa Arthur Napoleão (Sampaio Araújo & Cia.). dedicated to "the good old friend Satyro Bilhar", composer and one of Brazil's guitar pioneers. The melody of part A is played by the left hand in the low region of the piano (as in Odeon and Remando). According to biographer Luiz Antonio de Almeida, this may be a reference to the guitar's catchphrases, in homage to his friend, or according to some, to Bilhar's own hoarse voice. Tenebroso is one of Nazareth's most popular compositions, receiving at least 56 recordings until 2012.
