A hike and visit to the crash scene in the hills north of Oslo during the autumn of 2012.

On Ascension Day, Thursday May 10th 1945 Short Stirling LK297 from RAF 190 Squadron took off from Great Dunmow at 0355 hours. The Pilot was the 23 year old Canadian Pilot and Squadron Leader, Douglas Raymond Robertson. After a refuel in Scotland, the aircraft met bad weather and 10/10 cloud in the southern part of Norway.

The aircraft crashed due to very bad weather conditions, and all the 24 men onboard were killed, including the Air Vice-Marshal James Rowland Scarlett-Streatfeild, the leader of the 38 Transport Group Royal Air Force. He was the one who planned the major air attack across the Rhein during WW2, and in charge of the supply drops behind enemy lines in Netherlands. He flew Spitifire him self. A Norwegian Liason Major Peter Kato Juliebø was also killed during the crash.

The 24 men were buried at Vestre gravlund civil Cemetary in Oslo on July 2nd 1945, where they rest today.
