From the Teochew people's glutinous rice cakes in China to the sugarcane growers of India and a chocolate-maker in Côte d'Ivoire, this episode of Sweet Planet tells the story of how creating sweet foods can provide people with a sense of security and satisfaction. Making something sweet often involves hard work and dedication.
In China's Chaoshan, a family of artisans are working from early in the morning to late at night to produce the glutinous rice cakes that have become a unique cultural tradition locally. In India, thousands of farmers, mainly women, toil in the sugarcane fields to supply the sugar factories. And in Côte d'Ivoire, a chocolate manufacturer is striving to create a market for his products while ensuring that the local cocoa growers are properly rewarded for their hard work.
This program shows how bitterness in life can make the enjoyment of its sweetness all the more precious. For a taste of something sweet, check out Sweet Planet, co-produced by CGTN and Insight TV.
