Shirley Temple Sing & Dance Along 1998

Shirley Temple Sing & Dance Along was released on VHS by 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment in 1998, in time for Shirley Temple Black's 70th birthday. It was issued along with new colorized VHS versions of Heidi, Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm and The Little Princess, and was meant to be an interactive program for kids. "On the Good Ship Lollipop", "We Should Be Together" and other familiar Shirley song and dance numbers weren't featured in this compilation, as Fox was planning a sequel that never materialized (Shirley herself wasn't enthusiastic about the project, as she was never consulted). This video wasn't issued on DVD.

Some trivia/factoids...

The series of four Box Office Champion illustrations at 6:33 were published as part of a six-page announcement for Shirley's film, "The Little Princess" in one of the Quigley Publishing Company's trade magazines during 1939. Quigley promoted the yearly box office poll that Shirley topped from 1935-1938. The artwork was commissioned by Fox and the originals were presented to Shirley.

For those too young to remember! In "You Gotta S-M-I-L-E", Shirley imitated famous entertainer Al Jolson. His signature song was "Mammy", during which he would drop to his knees while he sang. "About A Quarter to Nine" was another popular Jolson tune from the 1935 film "Go Into Your Dance". Her second imitation was comedian Eddie Cantor, one of her pals at Fox. A line was borrowed from one his popular Depression-era songs, "Potatoes are cheaper, Tomatoes are cheaper, Now's the time to fall in love". The song "(I'd Love to Spend) One Hour with You" was adapted as the theme to Cantor's radio show, and the character "Park-ya-carcas" was his radio sidekick. "Ida" was Cantor's wife, for whom he developed the song, "Ida, Sweet as Apple Cider". All of these tunes can be found on youtube, if you're interested!

Bill Robinson choreographed the dance routines from "Dimples", including "He Was A Dandy".

Footage of Shirley as an adult is shown during "When I Grow Up". Nice!

Enjoy and sing (or dance) along! Thanks for watching!
