On the eve of Leonard Bernstein’s 100th Birthday, experience this legendary concert film of Gustav Mahler's Resurrection Symphony on a big screen, in the same place where it was recorded nearly half a century ago.

Friday 24th August at 7:30pm

Ely Cathedral, Ely, Cambridgeshire

This special screening at Ely Cathedral will be introduced in person by the concert’s director and Bernstein biographer Humphrey Burton, with broadcaster and film music concert producer Tommy Pearson. All in the place where it was originally filmed so beautifully!

A perfect way to commemorate the #BernsteinAt100 centenary celebrations: His greatest on-screen concert directed by Humphrey Burton in August of 1973. This performance of Gustav Mahler's Resurrection Symphony also features English mezzo-soprano Dame Janet Baker, English soprano Sheila Armstrong, alongside the Edinburgh Festival Chorus. All accompanied by the magnificent London Symphony Orchestra. Spellbinding brilliance!

Concert director, BBC Young Musician founder and Bernstein biographer Humphrey Burton CBE:

I am thrilled to be participating in this special screening of Mahler Two on Aug 24th. This film is probably the most ambitious thing I ever directed and because it was shot on 35mil it looks as fresh today as it did in 1973.

Executive & Artistic Director at Carnegie Hall Sir Clive Gillinson CBE:

The most compelling thing about Leonard Bernstein as a conductor, which was so clear to me as a player, but also in later years as the LSO’s manager, was the sense of discovering a piece of music as if it was being composed at the very moment that you were playing or hearing it. His insights and endless creativity were something that only a great composer could have brought to the music he conducted, and he had an uncanny gift of engaging everybody in the music as if you were hearing it for the very first time. There was also something magical about playing this music in the breathtaking context of Ely Cathedral, one of the most beautiful, serene and spiritual places on earth. I don’t think any of us at the time realised that we were making history with this performance.
