On August 21st 1991, the attempt to overthrow Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev collapsed; the coup plotters were themselves overwhelmed by a mixture of people power, the lack of Army support, and a charismatic leadership performance by Russian Federation President Boris Yeltsin.
