The Aulos of Pydna - Barnaby Brown

Barnaby Brown reports on progress in developing an accompaniment for a chorus from the Orestes by Euripides (c. 408 BCE). The melody was reconstructed from a papyrus fragment by Armand D'Angour in 2016 - a piece of mummy cartonnage in the Austrian National Library. The aulos, found at Pydna in northern Greece in 1996, was measured by Stelios Psaroudakēs and reproduced by Robin Howell. The reeds were made by Chrestos Terzēs at the 1st Euterpe doublepipe school, organised by the European Music Archaeology Project. For more info, see www.emaproject.eu/events/euterpe
