a celebration of spring with the OP1 - dawless synth jam

I've been trying to create a track celebrating the magic of spring since last year, but I ended up changing directions with it several times. At one point it was a jam on the Nunomo QUN, then I tried again with the Teenage Engineering OP-Z (parts of which became my last mountain jam), but eventually I realised the tape of the OP-1 might actually be the way to go instead. I grew up messing around with 4-track tape recorders and always loved them, and it's one of the reasons I still absolutely love messing around with my OG OP-1. And for this track it was the perfect choice as I wanted the sound palette to get pretty dense, so being able to layer and chop and overdub endlessly was really helpful.

The sound sources are varied. I've sampled bits from the original Qun and OPZ tracks. I've layered parts from the internal synth engines but also made a lot of sample instruments and drum patches (for short burst acoustic sounds like the flutes and bass guitar I put them on drum parts to make more natural sounding multisample instruments). There are some layers of my voice as well and they're re-enforced with parts from an Ableton vocal instrument.

I did a lot of back and forth from the tape to the computer to back things up (it's easy to make a mistake and ruin everything on the tape!) but also clean pops and things in Izotope RX as well as design new patches. I then recorded a long performance of the track and cut it down to the version here and mastered it in Ableton with Ozone.

The video was shot over the course of this spring (2024) on my Fuji XT30 with a selection of vintage lenses. It was cut in resolve and finished with Dehancer.
