India has made a significant breakthrough in deepwater energy exploration with the discovery of natural gas in the Sri Vijayapuram-3 exploratory well, located just 15 km off the east coast of the Andaman Islands at a water depth of 355 meters. Initial production testing at a depth of over 1900 meters in the Eocene formation has confirmed the presence of natural gas through continuous flaring.



Oil India Ltd. is conducting detailed gas sampling to determine the composition and calorific value of the gas, alongside isotope studies to understand its genesis. This discovery comes under the Samudra Manthan Mission (National Deep Water Exploration Mission), announced by Hon’ble PM on Independence Day 2025, which aims to exploit India’s offshore hydrocarbon reserves through a large number of deepwater and ultra-deepwater exploratory wells.



Currently, hydrocarbon presence has been reported in 2 out of 3 exploratory wells drilled by Oil India in the Andaman Basin during the ongoing campaign, marking a promising step toward enhancing India’s energy security.
