Jasmine n Sammy the amazons

Jasmine and Sammy were abandoned by their previous owner in their back yard.
Someone who lives out of state contacted me to help these two amazons out of the situation.
She assured me she wanted them to be safe. According to California state law the birds were considered
abandoned after 30 days and the new caretakers were responsible and liable for them.
The caretaker was unsuccessful in contacting/locating the previous owner after giving her due notice
to pick them up or they would be re-homed.

Both birds were basically on the sunflower seeds diet, Sammy the R/H had deformed legs,
sores on his feet, under weight, and he could hardly move around and was on the same perch for 25 ?? years!
Jasmine D/Y was way too over weight, had cataracts and what else… They were both badly needed
medical assistance. We contacted the Police Department, the District Attorney’s office, and the Animal Control Authority;
all three agencies agreed and assumed all legal ownership and liability. Then soon the caretakers
signed over all ownership rights to Mickaboo Companion Bird Rescue.
The birds immediately received baths, vetting, nutritious food and cared.

Jasmine and Nancy bonded instantly. She was a very good bird who never screamed or bit. All I had to do was say "scratch scratch"
and she would instantly run to her for head scratches. She loved being with people and was her world for the short time she had her.
One morning in early November Nancy found her in distress and rushed her to the vet. A large cancerous tumor was found
on her pancreas and liver. She was bleeding internally. She was on 24 hour oxygen, they did their best to keep her comfortable,
but she died 2 weeks later. She died on Nov. 17th. She was only 13+ years old. Her mom, Nancy,
still misses her terribly. She has her ashes and someday she will be buried with her. Rest in peace Jasmine.

Joan has had Sammy for about a year and considers her to be a very sweet, loving bird who wants nothing more than
to have her head scratched. Her legs are very arthritic and keep her from moving around much but she seems to like
to be "flown" and gets her exercise that way. In October her beak developed a funny looking spot so she was taken
to the Roseville Bird and Pet Clinic for an exam. They determined that she was a very old bird and also a very sick bird,
based on her blood work. She had a lesion on the inside of her beak, in her mouth. She was put on antibiotics,
which she took like a trooper, and seemed much improved but the lesion has not gone away and it is now suspected
to be a basal cell carcinoma. She has done a biopsy on Dec. 14th and we are waiting for the result to come back.
We are hopeful that there is not anything serious.
