ATPL Instruments 022 - Ep.44: Electronic Flight Ins. Sys. - EFIS & EADI | ATPL Training | ATPL Exams
Welcome back to ATPLation! ✈️ In this episode of our ATPL Instruments series, we begin exploring the Electronic Flight Instrument System (EFIS)—a revolutionary development that replaced traditional analog gauges with integrated digital displays. This lesson focuses on the EFIS architecture and one of its key components: the Electronic Attitude Director Indicator (EADI). Whether you’re flying glass cockpit aircraft or preparing for your ATPL exams, this is fundamental knowledge for modern cockpit operations. ✅
📌 What you'll learn in this episode:
🖥️ What Is EFIS?
Electronic Flight Instrument System (EFIS) is a suite of digital displays used to present flight information such as:
🔹 Attitude
🔹 Heading
🔹 Altitude
🔹 Airspeed
🔹 Navigation and flight director cues
EFIS replaces traditional round-dial instruments with Primary Flight Displays (PFDs) and Navigation Displays (NDs).
EFIS typically consists of: 1️⃣ EADI – Electronic Attitude Director Indicator
2️⃣ EHSI – Electronic Horizontal Situation Indicator
3️⃣ Display Units (DUs) – Screens that present information
4️⃣ Symbol Generators/Computers – Process and render flight data
🎯 EADI – Electronic Attitude Director Indicator
What it displays:
Pitch and roll (artificial horizon)
Flight director command bars
Airspeed tape (vertical scale on the left)
Altitude tape (vertical scale on the right)
Heading indication
Flight mode annunciations (FMA)
Autopilot status and armed modes
Operational Role:
The EADI is the pilot’s primary attitude reference, combining information that was previously split across multiple analog instruments.
It’s the central instrument for maintaining control and orientation, especially in IFR conditions.
Integrates autopilot and FMS modes, giving a full picture of aircraft attitude and guidance in one view.
🔄 EFIS Integration
Inputs come from:
✅ IRS/INS or AHRS – for attitude and heading
✅ Pitot-static system – for airspeed and altitude
✅ FMS and autopilot – for mode and flight director info
Outputs go to:
✅ PFDs, NDs, and EICAS/ECAM systems
✅ Autopilot system, allowing it to follow flight director guidance
⚠️ Advantages Over Analog Systems
📊 More information in one place – reduces pilot workload
🔍 Customizable views – filter modes based on phase of flight
⚠️ Better alerting – integrates warnings and status
🔁 System redundancy – can switch sources or screens in case of failure
🧠 ATPL Exam Tips
Know what the EADI displays and how it differs from the EHSI.
Understand how EFIS integrates autopilot, flight director, and navigation systems.
Be able to describe what data sources feed into the EFIS and how failure modes are handled.
Common questions include:
What does EADI provide that analog ADIs do not?
What is displayed on the flight mode annunciator (FMA)?
How is EFIS powered and backed up?
🎯 Why this episode matters:
✔️ EFIS is standard in all modern airliners and increasingly common in GA aircraft.
✔️ A solid grasp of EFIS/EADI is essential for passing the ATPL Instruments syllabus.
✔️ Prepares you to understand and operate today’s digital flight deck systems with confidence.
🚀 Whether you're preparing for EASA, FAA, or ICAO ATPL exams, or learning to fly a glass cockpit aircraft, this episode gives you the tools to interpret and trust the Electronic Attitude Director Indicator at the core of modern flight displays.
