I've been a lawyer, a top law student, an award-winning journalist and a lecturer in Communication Studies. Over the years, I've taught thousands of students law in my uniquely simple, relatable and entertaining style.
What's included?
The course is made up of 10 videos, which are each around 5 minutes. The videos are punchy and packed with information and motion graphics, so they’re entertaining to watch.
This course is for anyone who wants to know more about how law works in New Zealand. No prior knowledge of the law is required.
Here's an overview of the course:
Chapter 1: History of NZ’s legal system and how laws started coming from cases.
Chapter 2: An overview of NZ’s courts and how appeals and precedent work.
Chapter 3: Whether laws come from statutes or cases, how to know which case is the one that sets precedent, and finding the law within a case.
Chapter 4: NZ’s government and how Parliament makes laws, plus "secondary legislation".
Chapter 5: "Judicial review", or the courts saying whether certain laws and decisions are legal.
Chapter 6: New Zealand’s constitution.
Chapter 7: The Bill of Rights Act 1990 and a concept called "the Rule of Law".
Chapter 8: The legal significance of the Treaty of Waitangi and tikanga.
Chapter 9: Practical tips for finding and reading cases and statutes.
Chapter 10: Conclusion.
