STEPS TO ADJUST A MANUAL SLACK ADJUSTER

TOOLS REQUIRED

• wheel chocks (blocks)
• pry bar
• hammer
• gloves
• personal protective gear if required
• 9/16" box end wrench
• measuring device (applied stroke method)
• some way to mark push rod to measure travel (soap stone or marker :: applied stroke method)

• chock the wheels
• release the parking brakes
• ensure system air pressure is over 100psi (690kPa)
• determine that the brake is out of adjustment

• determine which direction the 'S" cam must rotate to make a brake application
• release the locking sleeve
• turn the adjusting nut until goes snug
• determine that the brake is manually applied with pry bar
• back of adjusting nut 1/3 to 1/2 turn
• re-engage locking sleeve
• determine brake is in adjustment
• adjust manual slack adjuster on other side of axle

For the purpose of a modern air brake system, it is unlikely that you are ever going to have to find or adjust a manual slack adjuster. However, in some licensing jurisdictions, you'll have to know how to adjust a manual slack adjuster.

In the province of British Columbia, for example, it is an automatic fail on the air brake pre-trip inspection if you cannot demonstrate or explain to the examiner how to adjust a manual slack adjuster.
