Step 11 in How to Buy a House-Closing Escrow: The Last Step
You feel like you’ve done everything and you’re about to finally get the keys!
You’ve signed a 100 pages for your lender (no exaggeration) and you just want to get the keys so you can move in. That 30-45 day wait is now over!
Yes, you get the keys when escrow has closed. That means you officially own the house. It means you can move in right after closing. You can walk in the door, change the locks, and never leave, if you want…as long as you pay your bills. Lol
Most buyer’s agents know when the buyer wants to move in, so they’ll try to have the keys available to you the moment you close escrow. In some cases, they’ll have a lockbox on site and give you the code to get your keys as soon as they have word that escrow closed, and then they’ll come pick up the lockbox later on or gift it to you. I’ve often picked up the keys from the escrow office, as well. But officially, the moment you have closed, based on the escrow officer’s word, you own the house, you owe the mortgage, the carpet, windows, doors, roof, etc are all yours! Get the keys and enjoy your new place!
